✦ About me · Aberdeen, Scotland
Hello, world.
I am Francesco, a software developer and technology enthusiast from Italy currently based in Aberdeen, Scotland. I have a passion for creating stuff with letters on a code editor and testing the latest technologies.
What is franwbu?
Franwbu is a simple play on words of my name, Francesco (Fran) and the
word
wbu, in internet slang, "what about you?". It's a funny
name I copied from my girlfriend's Steam name natwbu and I
thought it was a cool idea and catchy enough to use as my blog name.
Background
I have always been a person who likes to get technical and understand how things work. At the age of 12, I started to learn the basics of programming through a series of events and scripting languages most people (who aren't into video theory!) have probably never heard of.
Find below a brief overview of my journey from my early experiences to the present day.
In 2010, when I first explored the intricate realm of video processing, I immersed myself in AviSynth A powerful scriptable framework for video manipulation , a domain-specific scripting language designed for video post-production. This venture not only introduced me to fundamental programming paradigms, but also exposed me to sophisticated video filtering algorithms and techniques.
My initial experiments involved utilizing avs2pipemod A command-line utility that enables piping of AviSynth scripts to external applications , which facilitated the integration of AviSynth scripts created in AvsPmod with various encoding techniques. I employed this in conjunction with x264kMod A modified iteration of the x264 encoder optimized for AviSynth script inputs , allowing for advanced H264 encoding with custom filtering chains. Additionally, I extensively utilized FFmpeg A cross-platform solution for recording, converting and streaming audio and video in tandem with these, constructing complex command-line pipelines that combined the power of both tools. This approach enabled me to perform various video manipulations, from advanced denoising, masked debanding, anti-aliasing, reversing upscales, all while maintaining granular control over the encoding parameters of the H264 codec.
At the time I used to work in the Italian fansubbing scene, where I worked with various historical groups, mainly as an Encoder, Translator, Quality Checker. This experience lasted for about 8 years.
It's important to note that while fansubbing operates in a legal gray area, our groups strictly opposed piracy. We actively promoted the purchase of original content where available and promptly removed any content once officially licensed in Italy. Our efforts were non-commercial, aimed solely at making these shows accessible to Italian audiences when they were otherwise unavailable.
In 2019, I started focusing seriously on coding every day. I began with the basics, re-learning HTML and CSS through a full course by Brad Traversy (highly recommended), and then moved on to JavaScript, React, Node, and so on... and experimented with various small projects. During that time, I was studying Social Sciences because I was interested in learning about people's behavior and society. However, programming was more exciting to me, so I switched to Computer Science (2020).
🚧 More in the works for this section. Stay tuned! 🚧
In 2024, almost 15 years after my first coding experiences, I graduated from Robert Gordon University with a degree in Computer Science, achieving a 1st Class Honours Degree Classification.
During my studies, I worked as a Full-Stack Software Developer @ eCERTO (2022 ~ 2024), a startup building digital solutions to improve the sustainability and financial performance of capital projects across industries.
In January 2024, I started working with the Forensic Medicine Department of the University of Warmia and Mazury in Poland, developing a CNN for bruise age detection (2024 ~ 2025).
Currently working as a Software Developer at COMET, where we support organisations with scalable, AI-enhanced software to investigate incidents and build resilience, offering a modern SaaS suite designed to support incident management, root cause analysis, and audit processes.
Projects and Impact
Over the years, I’ve worked on a variety of projects, some of which can be found on my GitHub account, but find below a list of some of the technologies I have experience with:
